What is Beeswax?

Posted by Igor N. on

Beeswax is a sustainable and renewable product that is created by the industrious honeybees. It is the building block of hives and is the basis of the hexagon-shaped honeycombs that come to mind when a person thinks about honey. This wax plays a significant role in the success of a colony as well. In reality, this wax has a white or clear color, but it turns golden as it comes in contact with pollen.

How Beeswax is Made

Worker bees produce this type of wax. Honeybees require large amounts of nectar to create beeswax. The sugar in their collected nectar is processed into wax within their bodies and is secreted through special glands on their abdomen. The wax is laid in flakes and sheets, which are called scales. This becomes molded by other bees into the famous honeycomb shapes, which become filled with honey.

Beekeepers obtain the beeswax from these honeycombs. They use hot knives to uncap the comb and extract the honey, usually in centrifugal honey extractors. Leftover cappings, as well as older combs are melted down and filtered to produce pure beeswax. As the combs are removed, the colony is encouraged to renew itself. Bees like laying eggs in fresh combs.

Uses of Beeswax

This natural product has many different uses.
  • Skin Care. Since this type of wax offers protection against irritants, it is used in many skin care items. Unlike other products, it allows the skin to breathe. It seals moisture inside, so it works wonderfully on dry skin. Also, it contains antioxidants that bring a glow to the skin. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, it helps heal bruises and cuts. Finally, this wax contains vitamin A, which encourages cell regeneration.
  • Rust Prevention. This type of wax can be used to coat various metal items including tools. When rubbed onto bronze, it prevents tarnish from developing.
  • Wood Lubricant. When wood windows and doors start to stick, this wax may be used to restore sliding abilities.
  • Waterproofing. To achieve a waterproof barrier, this wax can be rubbed over shoes. After it is applied, it can be melted with the use of a hair dryer. Within a few minutes, the shoes will be safe from the rain and other wet conditions.
  • Polish. This wax can be used to polish leather goods like purses, boots, and wallets. Also, it can be used to create a furniture polish for wood pieces.
  • Candles. This wax is organic and consists of fatty acids and different alcohols. This adds to its flammability. Since it remains solid at room temperature, it is excellent for candle production.

Benefits of Beeswax Candles

There are many benefits that come with using beeswax candles over paraffin varieties. Here are some advantages of burning a beeswax candle.
  • Exudes a Natural Honey Fragrance. Instead of a strong odor, a candle made from this material provides a subtle scent of honey to any home.
  • Burns Clean. Unlike paraffin items that produce a great amount of soot, a natural wax candle burns clean. This means that there will be no residual dirt left on walls or furniture.
  • Resists Dripping. This type of wax is naturally dripless, which means less mess.
  • Burns Brighter. To maximize brightness, it is best to use a product that is made from beeswax. Paraffin has a lower melting point. This makes its flame weaker and less brilliant.
  • Hypoallergenic. A candle that is made of beeswax may actually clean a room's air by the release of negative ions, which binds to toxins and pollutants. This is especially helpful for individuals who suffer from asthma and allergies.
  • Burn Slower. This type of wax burns at a slower rate than paraffin, which means that it lasts much longer.
  • Supports Local Beekeepers. Purchasing a candle that is made from locally sourced beeswax, supports the location's agriculture. A large amount of food that grows in local farms relies on bee pollination. It is essential to support beekeepers who help these creatures thrive.

We offer a variety of beeswax candles. As you uncover the ideal items for your home, you will enjoy the number of advantages that they bring. Also, you can feel satisfied knowing that you are helping to sustain the essential bee population.
